A lean, flat-price, modular Modular DS alternative.

Modular DS is a strong cloud tool for WordPress management and client reporting, billed per site in tiers. Siteward is the self-hosted, flat-priced option: manage unlimited sites from your own server for one fixed cost, no per-site fees, no slowdown at scale.

If you want polished client reports, white-label branding and a fully managed cloud platform, Modular DS is an excellent fit. If your priority is monitoring and updating a large fleet of WordPress sites cheaply, on your own infrastructure, at one flat price, Siteward is the leaner alternative.

Modular DS and Siteward solve overlapping problems differently

Both tools let you watch and maintain many WordPress sites from one place. But they sit at opposite ends of the spectrum on two axes that matter most to agencies: where your data lives and how you pay as you grow.

Modular DS is a cloud platform from a Spanish team that has built a genuinely good reputation for client-facing reporting, uptime monitoring and a clean, modern interface. Your sites connect to Modular’s servers, and you pay on a tiered, per-site basis, so your bill rises as your portfolio grows.

Siteward, by OmnisWP, is two self-hosted plugins: a dashboard you install on one WordPress site, plus a lightweight child plugin on each site you manage. Everything runs on your own server, the dashboard pulls signed data from each child over OpenSSL-signed requests, and the price is flat regardless of how many sites you add. The free dashboard manages unlimited sites, including backup and cron health monitoring; Pro adds SSL & domain-expiry monitoring plus Zapier alerts.

Pricing model at scale

This is the biggest practical difference. Modular DS uses tiered, per-site pricing, plans are sized by how many sites you connect, so a 30-site agency pays more than a 10-site one, and a 200-site agency pays more again. (Exact tier prices change; check modulards.com for current figures as of 2026.) That model is fair and predictable, but it means your tooling cost scales linearly with your client list.

Siteward charges one flat price for unlimited sites. The free dashboard already covers uptime, fleet updates and critical-error detection with no site cap. Agency is $129/year and Lifetime is a one-time $399, both unlock Pro features, and neither adds a cent when you connect your 50th or 500th site.

For a growing agency the gap compounds. On per-site cloud pricing, a portfolio of a couple of hundred sites can run into thousands of dollars a year; on Siteward the same fleet stays at the flat plan price. If your business model depends on adding sites without your overhead climbing in step, flat pricing is the structural advantage. See the agency page for how that plays out.

Self-hosted vs cloud

Modular DS is fully cloud-hosted: you sign up, connect sites, and Modular handles the infrastructure. That is the right trade for many people, there’s nothing to install, maintain or update on the dashboard side, and the platform scales without you thinking about server resources. The trade-off is that your sites’ update, uptime and health data routes through a third party, and you’re dependent on their uptime and data policies.

Siteward is self-hosted by design. The dashboard lives on a WordPress install you control, and the data, which sites are down, what needs updating, backup status, stays on your own server. Connections between the dashboard and each child site are signed with an OpenSSL keypair, so requests are authenticated end to end. If keeping client data on your own infrastructure matters for compliance, contracts or principle, self-hosted is the deciding factor.

One nuance worth being fair about: because Siteward is self-hosted, your dashboard’s own uptime monitoring runs from your server, not from an independent cloud. Modular’s cloud checks have the advantage of being external to the sites they watch.

Feature focus: reporting vs lean monitoring

The two tools optimise for different jobs.

Modular DS leans into client reporting and branding. Its standout is professional, white-label PDF and scheduled reports you can send to clients, maintenance summaries, uptime, analytics and SEO data pulled together into something presentable. If selling and demonstrating the value of a care plan is central to your business, that reporting and branding layer is a real, differentiating strength. Modular’s uptime monitoring is also solid.

Siteward leans into lean monitoring, updates and flat cost. It deliberately does fewer things and does them fast:

  • Uptime monitoring across all sites with email alerts (and Zapier on Pro).
  • Fleet core, plugin and theme updates with one-click and bulk actions across your whole portfolio, see features.
  • Critical-error and white-screen detection that names the culprit, when a site goes down from a fatal error, Siteward tells you which plugin or file caused it, not just that something broke.
  • Speed at scale, a parallel engine keeps the dashboard responsive at 200+ sites without special tuning.
  • Health checks, free, UpdraftPlus backup health and WP-Cron health included in the free dashboard; Pro adds SSL & domain-expiry monitoring and Zapier webhook alerts.

What Siteward intentionally does not ship is a client-reporting and white-label module. That’s a deliberate scope choice to stay lean and fast, not an oversight, but it’s the clearest reason to choose Modular DS instead.

When Modular DS is the better choice

Be honest with yourself about the job. Modular DS is the better pick when:

  • Client reporting drives your revenue. If branded, scheduled reports are how you justify and sell maintenance plans, Modular’s reporting and white-label layer is worth paying for.
  • You want zero infrastructure. No dashboard to host, update or back up, Modular runs it all for you.
  • You prefer external, cloud-based uptime checks that are fully independent of your own server.
  • Your portfolio is small enough that per-site tiered pricing stays comfortably cheaper than a flat plan, and you value the polished UI over flat cost.

When Siteward is the better choice

  • You’re scaling and want costs to stay flat, unlimited sites at one price beats per-site tiers as you grow.
  • Data must stay on your own infrastructure for compliance or principle.
  • You manage a large, fast-moving fleet and want monitoring plus bulk updates that stay quick at 200+ sites.
  • You want to know exactly what broke, critical-error detection that names the offending plugin or file.
  • You don’t need client-facing reports and would rather not pay for a feature you won’t use.

Migrating from Modular DS to Siteward

There’s no lock-in to unwind. Install the Siteward dashboard on one WordPress site, add the Siteward Child plugin to each site you manage, and connect them, your fleet populates as sites come online. You can run Siteward alongside Modular DS during the switch and disconnect Modular once you’re confident. Because Siteward is self-hosted, nothing depends on a third-party account staying active. The resources and comparison guides walk through setup, and the free tier means you can trial the full unlimited dashboard before spending anything.
